Braces make teeth straighter, but they also create lots of new corners where food and plaque can hide. If you brush the same way you did before, you’ll probably miss important spots. A few simple adjustments can keep your mouth clean through the whole treatment.
Use a soft-bristled brush and take your time. Start by brushing above the brackets, angling the bristles down towards them. Then brush directly over the brackets, and finally below, angling the bristles up. Small, gentle strokes work better than fast scrubbing. Electric brushes with orthodontic heads can also help, but they still need good technique.
Interdental brushes or special orthodontic flossers make it easier to clean under the wire and between teeth. This step feels slow at first, but once you learn the pattern, it becomes part of the routine. Rinsing with water or a fluoride mouthwash after meals can wash away loose debris when you cannot brush immediately.
The aim is to come out of braces with better teeth, not straight but damaged ones. Clean habits during treatment prevent white spots, cavities and gum problems, and make your final result truly worth the effort.
