Antacids are popular for quick relief from heartburn, acidity and indigestion. Taking a tablet or liquid occasionally after a heavy meal or spicy food isn’t usually a big problem. They neutralise stomach acid for a short time, easing that burning in the chest or sour taste in the mouth.
The issue arises when antacids become a daily habit. If you’re popping them several times a week for months, your body is telling you something. Frequent heartburn can be a sign of gastro-oesophageal reflux, dietary patterns that irritate the stomach, or other digestive issues.
Relying only on antacids may mask symptoms while the underlying problem persists. Long-term overuse of certain products can also affect mineral balance or interact with other medicines.
If you notice you have a favourite antacid brand the way others have a favourite snack, it’s time to step back. Look at meal timing, portion size, very late dinners, alcohol or heavy fried foods. Basic changes, combined with medical advice when needed, work better than endless self-medication.
Short-term, occasional use? Fine. Long-term dependence? Red flag worth checking.
